Nature's Kitchen - Chapter 2
Here is my summary of chapter 2 from the book, Nature's Kitchen.
Chapter 2: Total Health - A Heritage of the Lord
In Chapter 2 the author admits that one cannot attain total health without taking the time to look at and evaluate our relationship with Jesus and the importance of God’s word in our lives.
There are multiple examples in the Bible that talk about good health being from God and Him wanting us to experience good health. 3 John 2 says, “Beloved I wish above all things that you would prosper and be in good health”. He desires for us to be healthy!
We need to care for our temple – 2 Corinthians 6:19 – 20 We should seek Jesus in this area! Here are three questions they ask to get you thinking about how you are taking care of yourself. These really stuck out to me.
Just how are you caring for the temple God has entrusted to you?
1) Are you getting adequate rest?
2) Are you exercising enough to keep your muscles and organs functioning properly?
3) Are you feeding your body good food, just as you feed your spirit good food? Or are you loading up on too many fast foods, full of too many chemicals and too much junk for the body?
Our body needs the proper ingredients to grow and dwell. We protect our spiritual body from negative influences like pornography, violence, sex in the media – Likewise we need to protect our bodies from negative foods that contain toxins, chemicals and foreign substances that keep our bodies from operating efficiently and pollute them. (**Really like this point - let's discuss this one**)
Nutrition and health is a choice - We are responsible for our own health. No one follows you around to make sure you are reading your Bible instead of sitting in front of the TV for hours. The same goes for our eating habits. (For me, it is just a lack of knowing what it good and what is bad!)
We are responsible for our own health. “We cannot depend on the US government to be responsible for our health…We cannot depend on the medical community to keep us healthy either. American doctors are overworked as it is, just taking care of people who are already sick.” (page 26) .
We each need to shoulder the responsibility of our own health. “Friends, this is not a game; it is a lifestyle day-in and day-out. We have been on the firing line, both spiritually and physically, for the two are intertwined."(page 27)
I appreciate the three questions posed concerning taking care of our own bodies. Which one sticks out to you? I feel that I should read these three questions once a week and see how I answer them.
Let's discuss!
In reading this I could certainly relate to the issues we all face not just as Americans but as believers living in America and the struggles we all face in this battle of food vs rest vs caring of our bodies. There is a HUGE spiritual connection and one I have struggled with for many years. The difficulty for me is that I forget to eat or don't desire to eat which is just as harmful as eating the junk food! I starve myself which messes up the whole way my body is to function at it's best and then it's just the domino effect from there. This is a really great read and one that has given me another pause for thought and the reminder to spur into action again.
